During my Freshmen and Sophomore years I participated in the Community Councils (CC) on my dorm floors. Freshmen year I was the events coordinator. I would plan and organize sporting events, movie nights, game nights, etc. Though my floor was active in the events I planned, I had little other help from my fellow CC members. This was inconvenient, but it did give me the opportunity to grow as a leader. I was able to work on my 2 main weaknesses, relationship building and creativeness. As the only one planning activities, I had to come up with the ideas and motivate my hall mates to come by myself. This made me reflect on different group roles and practicing my skills in a group setting (Teams 1-3, Values 2-4). Sophomore year I took a step forward and became my new floor's president. Again, my CC was not particularly active, and residents even less so. Now in a position of higher power, I tried to emulate the relationship building skills I witnessed in my previous Community Adviser (CA). Through this, I learned to adapt my leadership approach based on my earlier experiences (Teams 4). I persevered and planned events, organized meetings, and facilitated communication from the floor to the CA and above. In both cases I learned what leadership looks like when others are not committed, engaged, or interested. It takes a lot of mental toughness to continue to plan events and execute them when their reception is poor, but I believe it was worth it for those who did come.
