After Hurricane Maria devastated the US territory of Puerto Rico, the US government did the least it possibly could to help the territory to its feet. After several months of wondering what I could do to help, I reached out to several people on campus and connected with the Chicano Latin-American Student Association (CLASA). With their support, I came up with several fundraising ideas. However, I had little experience in leading a group of this size or at this level. So while I had a lot plans, availability, and too much delegation undermined my plans. We did put together a bake sale to spread awareness and raise funds, but it was much less than I had set out to do. As a leader, one must walk a tightrope between being too hands on or off. Despite not achieving my goals, I did learn that I need to be more hands on and keep a tighter leash on my planning, so I don't overextend. This was a situation that demanded a more vocal leader that would take the reigns and run forward, something I failed to realize at the time (Values 2-3).
