It wasn’t until this semester that I fully reflected upon and realized the cultural context I grew up in and currently live in. In the humanities class, Human Diversity and Humanities Traditions, we read Immigrant Voices, edited by Achy Obejas and Megan Bayles. The book is a compilation of immigrant stories on coming to America, living here, and returning home. Reading these stories made me think on the immigrant experience and that of my father. My father came to the US as an international college student, met my mother and stayed. Before reading Immigrant Voices, I had never considered that my father was and is an immigrant, or that, while growing up in Mexico, Venezuela, and Kazakhstan I was an immigrant. As a young child in a new environment you adjust and adapt, but you don’t really realize how different you are. You focus on what makes you similar to those around you, so you can fit in. These stories made me take a reflect on my life and reanalyze my own habits and their origin (self 4).
