While I had previously stopped by for a quick look, during the 2017-2018 school year I joined the Zoology club as a full member. I was excited to join a group of people that shared my interests, and looked forward to engaging topics, discussions, and events. However, I was let down. It quickly became evident that the President of the club only took the position as a resume stuffer. Meetings were always lectures that she put together the previous day, when she could not get somebody else to come up with something. This motivated me to take a position of leadership in the club to help direct it towards what I had hope to see when I originally joined (Values 3). In the spring semester a replacement for club secretary was needed. I took the opportunity to join the Zoology executive board in this capacity, I helped lead members of our club as we participated in the Maverick Day of Service. At the end of the semester I was elected as the Vice-President for the following year. Having learned from my previous experiences, I believe I have helped create a more engaged and active club. As Vice-President I have been able to take a more supporting role to help my Presidents, but I have also taken the lead on several projects, such as fundraising and our visit to the National Eagle Center, when I felt that a strong hand was needed (Values 4). This is what leadership ultimately mean to me, taking responsibility to help further the goals of a team (Teams 3-4).
